Alternate Historian's Note: Today we're going to conclude the presentation of After, our NaNoWriMo novel. We will then begin work on a side-project – a collection of several timelines with more-or-less complete stories inside them – The Fall, the Tolman timeline, the Mormon War, the Lascaux Cave story, and more – that will have After included with it. Once they're edited together, we'll put the lot up for sale on Lulu. If you would be interested in this, or would like to suggest something for inclusion in the collection, please email me and let me know. And, speaking of side projects, Guest Historian Stephen Payne has one, Crimson Kiss, available for free on Lulu. Check it out.

in 2007, as Heavenly forces break down the walls of New Babylon, now-former European Union President and current Anti-Christ Morris Appleby kneels before the last Christian priest in his domain and confesses his sins. Just after he asks for forgiveness and takes Jesus into his heart, the Host bursts in on him. “My brethren,” he announces to them, “I am now one of you.”

After(conclusion)
It took a few days, but Senator Kerry and President Bush unraveled the coup as they advanced across the country and entered Washington, D.C. The generals and CIA men who were at the top of the conspiracy were thrown into jail, and Senator Kerry promised that when he took office as president the next month, they would be stuck in a jail cell for the rest of their lives. The nation's pundits found the coup the perfect example of the perfidy of the other side, no matter which side of the political spectrum they fell on.
Ordinary people tried to pull their lives back together. Jake and Mike moved into the Johnson's house across the street from Steph. Mike found the presence of a former sergeant oddly comforting, and Jake – well, Jake spent a lot of time with Janice. Janice published a book about the coup which became a major bestseller, and made her small group of friends heroes. She spent a lot of time traveling around the country, with Jake by her side, giving lectures on how the paranoid atmosphere of 2004 contributed to the near-success of the governmental overthrow.
Steph became the most popular real estate agent at her office; everyone wanted to be sold their new home or office by the agent who had saved the president. Even when she self-deprecatingly told them that she had only been part of the group, they still asked to hear about it. She didn't like to talk about it too much, because it made her think of Kevin; but she usually indulged them a bit. It really helped her sales figures.
Joan and George became the most popular kids at their schools, regaling the student body with their tales of life on the run, agents busting into their house, and dead bodies everywhere. George, in particular, embellished a few of the stories to make himself more central, but no one really took him to task about it.
Kevin's sister Rene sold his house, but took his dog. She used the money that she inherited from him to fund a scholarship for promising students of computer science. She felt that he would have wanted something for people to remember him by, if he couldn't enjoy the money himself.

On the anniversary of the coup, the 6 Austinites got together at Steph's place for dinner. After the fine meal, Janice raised a glass of wine. “To Kevin and Eli,” she said. The others toasted, the adults with wine and the kids with soda. After a moment of silence for their departed friends, the kids cleared off the table and went to bed while the adults gathered in the living room.
“There are days when it almost seems like it didn't happen,” Mike said, looking out Steph's window. “Everything's just the same as it always was.”
“No, it's different.” Janice plopped herself down on the couch by Jake. “A lot more people are reading conspiracy web sites.”
Steph smiled as she took a seat in her big recliner. “Who could blame them?”
“I'm getting, like, half a million hits a day,” Mike said, proudly. “You wouldn't believe the ad revenues.”
Jake shook his head. He was not entirely comfortable with how they made their money these days. “It's a little hard for me to accept that we're all making a nice livin' off of something that almost destroyed our country.”
“Almost,” Janice reminded him. “But, it didn't. We're stronger than that. That's what all these little petty wannabe dictators forget about us. We're way too attached to freedom to just let it go cuz of a fake nuke.”
“Let's not talk about it anymore,” Steph said. “I have to talk about it with clients all the time.”
“OK,” Janice said, “but you're really cutting down on my conversational repertoire.”
“Hey,” Mike said, turning back to the group, “what do you think they would've done if Kerry hadn't won the election?” He wilted a bit as Steph glared at him. “What? That's an entirely different subject.”
“I don't want to talk about alternate reality again,” Steph said. She looked over at Janice and Jake. “He talks about that all the time when y'all are off on your book tours. He comes over here for dinner, and talks to kids about this new site he found about alternate history. Now, it's finally gotten Joanie interested in history, so it's not all bad, but you should hear some of the crazy things they talk about.”
“Well, there are changes I'd make in this one,” Jake said, putting his arm around Janice's shoulders, “but this reality seems to have worked out all right.”
“There's a change I'd make,” Steph said, looking with just a slight twinge of envy at the happy couple.
“Me, too,” Mike said, looking back outside. “Of course, we wouldn't have met each other without the coup. Except for Janice and me; and you two, I guess, because of the whole married to each other thing.” He shut his mouth to contain the tumble of words.
“Life is strange,” Janice said. “You never know where it's going to take you.”
“Good places, sometimes,” Jake said, holding her hand.
“And bad,” Mike said, looking out the window again.
“Like you said last year,” Steph told them. “Interesting times.”

in 2006, the Angelic Host pushes out of the Mediterranean and begins its long march into northern Europe, Africa and Asia. European Union President and admitted Anti-Christ Morris Appleby goes on international television and advises everyone, “Start converting to Christianity right now. Senator Kerry agreed to push to Bryan and supply the president with some backup, and met with practically no resistance on the way. Mike, Steph and her children went along for the ride, grieving the entire way. When they got to Bryan, though, the reunion with Janice and Jake was joyous – Mike even attempted to hug Jake, which Jake rebuffed more gently than anyone else expected.
“So, what now?” Mike was seated at Kevin's computer. Kerry and Bush had gone off to Austin to pay a little visit on Governor Perry, and then were going to head on to Washington. “Are we out of the picture?”
Jake said, “I think so. Anybody who'd want us has bigger targets, now. We just gotta try and put our lives back together.”
“Easier said than done,” Steph said, rubbing her temples. “What about Kevin?”
“He has a sister who was refugeed out of Waco,” Janice answered. “They're trying to find her now. She's about to get good news and bad – she's a millionaire, but she's also an only child, now.” Her voice trembled a little bit, but she was holding it together. Steph's eyes grew bright with tears.
“Eli was already an only child,” Mike said. “His folks died a few years ago. We took out an insurance policy last year on each other. It was a joke.” His voice broke. “I guess I get to collect.”
“Maybe you and Kevin's sister can get together,” Janice said with a slight smile towards him. “You're both nouveau riche.” Mike's mouth twisted in a little grin.
“Can we go home, now?” Joan tried not to be whiny about it, but she had clearly had all the adventure she could take.
“They said we should wait a couple of days, baby,” Steph told her. “Then, we can try to get back to normal.” She looked over at Jake, who was standing behind Janice and rubbing her shoulders. “Or, at least as close to normal as we can get.” She stood up from Kevin's couch and said, “Who's hungry? I'm ready for lunch.”
“Kevin's fridge is a little bare at the moment,” Janice told her.
“That's OK,” Steph said. “I still got most of the twenty grand he gave me. We can eat out.”
They all piled into the SUV and drove into town to find a restaurant. Not knowing the town, they stopped at the first chain joint that they saw from the highway. It was practically deserted, so they grabbed a large table and ordered the best food on the menu. The three adults who weren't driving ordered alcohol; Steph got herself a soda.
Janice stood up and held her drink up in a toast. “Like that old Chinese curse – to interesting times.” They all murmured agreement and drank.

in 2005, just as European Union President Morris Appleby had feared, conflict erupts in Israel between his forces and the fundamentalists. Also as he had feared, angels come streaming down from the sky to fight on the side of the fundamentalists. Mike scanned the board for any response. There was nothing in any of the code names that Janice used. “No response yet,” he told Steph.
She chewed a fingernail and tried to calm herself down. “Does she have a cell phone?”
“Are you crazy? Do you know how insecure that kind of transmission is? You call her, she might as well be shouting out in the middle of the street.” Steph gave him her best mommy look. “Oh, all right.” Mike pulled out his own cell phone and dialed. “It's ringing.”

Janice jumped when she felt her cell phone buzz at her hip. “Holy crap,” she said, her heart slowing back to a reasonable pace. She slid it out and flipping it open. “Mike!”
Jake jumped over to her side, saying, “How are Joan and George? And Steph?”
“Did all four of you make it to New Mexico?”

“I heard your ex,” Mike said to Steph. His face grew slack as he realized who had perished in the mission, but hope sprang up in him. It was possible that it was all part of the conspiracy, after all. “Janice, we heard Bush say it, but was that just... I mean, is Eli...”

Janice lowered her head. “Neither Eli or Kevin made it, Mike.” Her voice trembled slightly, but she maintained most of her composure. “But, they were heroes. You should've seen Eli. He took a half dozen of 'em down with him.”

“Just like he always wanted,” Mike said, tears running down his face. He handed the phone to Steph because he couldn't speak anymore.
Steph was finding it a little hard to keep her voice, too. “Janice, this is Steph. Did you say that Kevin wasn't with you anymore?”

“Just me and Jake,” Janice said. “I'm sorry, Steph. I know you two were starting to like each other.” She had to stop talking for a second to pull herself together, then had to ask, “Is his dog OK?”

“He's fine,” Steph said. Her eyes were misty, but she was in better shape than Mike. She looked over at Joan and George and said, “Can my kids talk to their father?” When Janice said yes, Steph handed the phone to her daughter and walked over to Mike. She put an arm around him and hugged him tightly. “I'm sorry.”
Mike let her comfort him while he cried.

in 2005, although the nation of Israel has been treated fairly as a sovereign nation in the New World Order, leaders influenced by the rapidly decreasing Orthodox Jewish and Fundamentalist Christian cults who have retreated to the tiny country declare war against all bordering nations and the European Union. EU President (and Anti-Christ) Morris Appleby reluctantly orders peacekeepers to the borders, with strict orders to contain hostilities. Although his troops are well-trained to maintain order in volatile situations, the fanatics in charge of Israel are not looking for anything other than war. P & A-C Appleby orders as many Israelis evacuated as wish to leave, but his forces are stymied by the hard-core fundamentalists, whose threats have cowed most of the general population into obedience.

After(cont.)
The police and National Guard arrived at the station moments after the president's speech. “All right,” a corporal said, walking in and waving his rifle around, “where's the fake?”
Jake put himself between the president and the rifle. “He's no fake. The ones you're gettin' your orders from are the fakes.”
The corporal was clearly of two minds about that. “I have my orders.”
“Right – from the president, telling you to stand down.” Jake took a step closer and added, “And from this sergeant, corporal. I'm tellin' you to lower your weapon right now.”
President Bush walked up to the stand-off and said, “Look, I don't mean to cut in here, fellas, but I think we're on a bit of a time-table.” The corporal stared at him in shock. “What's your name, soldier?”
“Marty, sir... Marty Johnson.”
Bush walked right up to him and shook his hand, ignoring the rifle. “Good to meet you, Marty. I understand you're just doing your job and everything, but we need to get goin'. Why don't you and your friends here give us an escort?”
After a moment's hesitation, the corporal saluted and said, “Yes, sir.”
Bush strode out, followed by Jake and Janice, then the soldiers and policemen who had walked in. He went straight to the car that they had taken from Crawford and climbed into the back. Janice got in the front seat, and Jake said, pointing at the Guardsmen, “All right, y'all follow us,” he pointed at the police, “and y'all just go on back to your jobs. You'll hear more from us later.” He sat behind the wheel and started up the engine. “That was pretty good, there, Mr. President.”
“Sometimes you just have to walk right through them,” he said, smirking. “Where to now, Jake?”
“We need to get to a computer at our friend's place,” Janice said, looking over at Jake. “We need to find out if Jake's kids and ex-wife are OK.”
Bush nodded. “I'm just along for the ride. Let's go.”
Jake pulled away from the television station and headed to the highway, followed by the two Guard trucks. Once on the highway, he drove to the exit that he remembered Kevin's house being down, and then followed the small road until he got to the house. “Where's the dog?”
Janice smacked her forehead. “That's right, your wife and kids took him.” She looked at the deserted place and frowned. “He said he was never going to see it again.”
“Let's try not to think about it.” He turned off the engine and got out. The trucks pulled in behind him and the corporal hopped out and walked up to him. “OK, corporal, I want you and your men to stand watch out here. You let me know if somebody drives up, got it?”
“Yes, sergeant,” the corporal said, saluting. He directed his men to take up positions outside the house.
Janice took the key, still sticky with Kevin's blood, out of the bag it had been placed in and opened the door. She walked straight over to Kevin's computer and turned it on.
Jake walked up behind her and said, “Don't you need to check it, first? Remember Bradley takin' off all that spy stuff from Steph's PC?”
“Would you know what it looked like?” Jake shook his head. She looked over at the president. “Hey, George, would you know what PC spying equipment would look like.” He raised an eyebrow and frowned at her. “Didn't think so.” She looked up into Jake's eyes. “They already know where we are. Secrecy just slows us down, now.”

in 2004, President of the European Union (and the world beyond), Morris Appleby, also known as the Anti-Christ, reluctantly bans the Christian religion, even though he knows it will finally bring down the attention of You-Know-Who from above. He is just having a hard time with all the assassination attempts and so-called tribulation warriors and their like who are fighting the fun, and has no further choice but to try to cut off their disruptive influence.

After(cont.)
They walked into the small studio amid a buzz of excitement. Although it had been in a losing cause, the local television station had supported President Bush heavily in the election, and many of the people there had actually met him before. He was going to use his legendary memory for people's names to charm and convince them to break out of the emergency broadcast mode and let him use their equipment to make a direct appeal to the local area. Once that was done, they could expand from there. After they were public with the reality of his predicament, it would be very hard to shut him down again.
The station's crew and management were only too willing to help. “Mr. President, anything we have is at your disposal,” the station manager told him, practically shuddering with excitement.
“Thanks, Ace,” he said, smiling and winking. “Let's get set up, then. You're about to have a prize-winning story.”
As the TV crew prepared the president to appear on camera and got ready to break into the emergency news feed, Jake and Janice just stood around and watched. Both of them felt that if they even sat down, they'd collapse from exhaustion. “Has it just been two days?” Janice leaned against Jake and he put his arm around her.
“Three, I think. It's pretty much all a blur to me, now.”
She patted his stomach. Man, that's hard as a rock, she thought, smiling. She then thought about something that made her pull away. “We need to find out if your kids and Mike and Steph are OK.”
He thought about that for a minute. “Well, the only way I know we're gonna be able to do that is by heading off to New Mexico.”
“Mike's probably checking our web boards obsessively. I could leave him a message to contact us there.”
“OK. I guess we can do that at Bradley's place.” They looked away from each other at the mention of Kevin's name, although he squeezed her shoulder lightly, and she placed her hand over his. “I'm just wonderin' how long we need to keep watch over the president. It's not like we know a lot of people we can trust with him.”
“Yeah, that's gonna be a problem. I guess we should take him with us.”
“Think he'll want to come?”
“You're good with a gun. We can make him.” They both snickered a bit. “Maybe we can get a nap while we're there.”
“That'd be good.”
Someone from the station came over to ask them to keep quiet. “We're about to start the president's address,” she said, sounding very full of herself. Jake and Janice stopped talking, and watched as the stage manager gave the signal to the president to begin his speech.
“My fellow Americans,” he began, using that old chestnut for what might be the last time. “For the last couple of days, you have been told many stories about me and what happened to my ranch at Crawford. Well, I'm afraid that what you have been told is a lie.”

One of Kerry's aides came running into the tent and up to the senator. “Sir, we're getting something off the satellite feed. A Texas station in someplace called Bryan is broadcasting a message from Bush – the real one, apparently.”
“Bryan?” Steph walked over to Kerry and the aide. “That's where our friend Kevin Bradley is from. They must have taken the president back there.” She was amazed. “They did it.”
“We'll have to come up with some commendation for your friends,” Senator Kerry said to her. He turned back to the aide and asked, “Can we get a TV in here and see what he's saying?”
“Yes, sir.” A television set was, in fact, following her into the tent, with the president on the screen. “We've told our CBS contact to run this, too. We should be able to get you on the air within the hour.”
“Outstanding,” he said, then settled in front of the set to watch his former rival speak.

“It was only through the efforts of 4 heroic Texans that I was freed from my own basement. Unfortunately, two of those brave people gave their lives in that mission. “Did he say that two of them didn't make it?” Joan was shaking. “Mom, do you think Dad...”
Steph hugged her daughter and pulled her son into an embrace. “I don't know, baby. I don't know.”
Mike pulled out his laptop. “I'll leave a message on our web board. Janice or Eli'll be able to tell us who made it.”
“As long as they survived.” Steph looked at Mike visibly deflate. “It's worth a try. Fifty-fifty chance, right?”
“Right,” Mike said, tapping keys on his keyboard as he tried to quiet his fears.

in 2002, various plagues begin striking the citizens of the New World Order who have been given the MOTB identification chip in their right hand or forehead. Fortunately, the universal health care provided by the NWO is able to contain or cure even the most virulent pathology, so that the citizens aren't troubled too heavily by the boils, frogs, fire rain and so forth that afflicts them. President and Anti-Christ Morris Appleby, sporting most of the afflictions himself, proudly visits a government clinic each time he must be treated, in order to reduce shame about these diseases/injuries, as well as promote the clinics.

Senator and President-elect Kerry was very tall. Steph felt like she was a little girl standing next to him as they watched Mike present the material they had brought with them. When Mike was done, the senator said, “We need to get this into some national broadcast.” He turned to an aide and told her, “See what you can do. We still have those contacts at CBS, right?”
“Yes, sir,” she told him, scooping up the disks and tape from Mike. “I'll get him on the cell and see if they can start cutting into the emergency broadcasts.”
“Excellent,” Kerry said, turning back to Steph and Mike. “It's amazing that you were able to get all this together, and then get it to us. Thank you.”
“Do you think you'll be able to help our friends in Crawford?” Steph looked up into the tired face of the older man, and he looked around at his command personnel in the tent.
He asked one of the military men standing around, “Can we feasibly make a move on Crawford?”
“Probably wouldn't be a bad idea,” a man wearing colonel's markings said. “We can finally give those reporters with us something to film. Showing Bush's ranch still standing might not be bad propaganda.”
“How quickly can we get there?”
“Let me check.” He pulled a couple of other men over to a corner and spoke with them quietly.
Mike had been stealing glances at Kerry the entire time they had been brought into his presence, and finally asked the question that had obviously been gnawing at him. “How do we know you're the real Senator Kerry? I mean, I found an expert to identify the Bush double; do I need to find one to do the same to you?”
Several people looked awkwardly away from the Senator and the conspiracy nut. Steph smiled and shrugged when Senator Kerry looked questioningly at her. After a moment in which he was obviously thinking of a careful way to say it, he replied, “I don't have a body double, I'm afraid. I'm one of a kind.”
That didn't satisfy Mike. He narrowed his eyes and took a good look at Kerry, then said, “I'll be keeping an eye on you.”
Kerry decided to ignore that, and turned to Steph. “It's going to be unsafe for you and your children until we can take down the coup leaders. If you'd like, we can send you back to New Mexico with an escort.”
Mike's eyes lit up. “Can we go to Roswell?”
Steph could see the massive effort that the senator exerted not to roll his eyes. “Of course. I'll get some people to organize your trip.”
“Thank you, sir,” Steph said, shaking his hand. “I just hope this'll all be over soon.”
“We all do, Mrs. Morris.” The colonel returned to his side and Kerry looked at the clipboard that was handed to him.
“If we send a small team, they can be there by lunch,” the colonel told him. “If you want a large force, it'll be there tomorrow.”
“Quicker's probably better,” Steph spoke up. “Our friends might need help.”
The senator nodded. “Send the small team, but make sure they have one of the reporters with them, and document everything.” He looked at Steph's hopeful face, and added, “Tell them that speed is of the essence.”
“Yes, sir,” the colonel said, taking his clipboard back and walking off to organize the mission.
Mike, having barely contained himself during that exchange, broke in with, “Can we go to Roswell, now?”

He assumes his horned, red-skinned form for a moment, prompting the militants to cry out to the camera, “See? President Bush said, “I should go down and talk with Rick. He can call back the Guard, and we can head to Washingon.”
“You mean Governor Perry?” Janice was still a little shaken and red-eyed from the last couple of deaths she had witnessed. “What if he's part of all this? Then you just put yourself in his hands.”
“She's right, Mr. President.” Jake had a small bag with the few things that Kevin had been carrying on him, and was moving the three of them back to the car they had taken from the Crawford compound. “Our best bet is to get you to the resistance being led by Senator Kerry in New Mexico.”
The president's face took on a sour look. “Leading a resistance, huh? Typical.”
“He does become the president next month.” Janice tried to contain the smirk she wanted to give him.
“I guess that's why they did this now.” Bush's expression grew even more bitter. “Wanted to take control with my security double while I was still in office.”
Janice looked like she had just had a line ticced on a mental checklist. “You have a security double?”
“Yep.” He climbed into the front seat of the sedan. Jake took the driver's seat and Janice climbed into the back. “Kind of a shock when they brought him in to tell me he was going back to Washington as me. Didn't even try offering me the job.”
Janice felt compelled to ask, “Would you have taken it?”
The two of them locked eyes for several seconds before he answered her, “I s'pose not. Would have been nice to have been offered, is all.”
“Mm-hhm.”
Jake drove out of the hospital and headed towards the highway. “Wherever we go, we need to keep public and loud. As long as people know we got the president with us, we're OK. If somebody tries to get him away from us, or get us all someplace isolated, we make a loud noise. Y'all understand?” They both nodded. “We need someplace where people love the president, but probably aren't part of the coup.”
Janice picked up the small bag with Kevin's possessions. “We needed to check on his dog, anyway.”

They saw a line of trucks on the highway they were heading towards and slowed down. Steph was thankful for the reprieve from all the bouncing. “I think they're pointed towards our side, so that would make them the New Mexicans,” Mike said. “I'm a little turned around, so I'm not a hundred percent sure.”
“Only one way to find out, I guess.” Steph pointed at the head of the line and said, “Let's go up to them – slow. We don't wanna get shot at.”
“Right.” He steered the SUV slowly towards the line of trucks, and saw them slow down. One of the trucks broke out of the line and veered off towards them. Mike rolled to a stop and let the truck approach them.
The truck was driven by an older serviceman, who pulled up in front of the SUV and pulled out a bullhorn. “Keep your hands where I can see them,” his voice pounded out at them. “Get out of the car slowly.”
All four of them complied, holding their hands out in front of them. When the soldier saw the children, he relaxed. “We have some vital information for you guys,” Mike shouted at him. “The guy they've got heading to Washington isn't the president, and we can prove it.”
The soldier's eyebrows raised. He hopped out of the truck and walked over to them, his hand on his pistol. He looked them over carefully, then said, “What kind of evidence?”
“Seismic data from Waco – no nuke went off anywhere near Crawford. And – what else was it, Steph?”
“Movie of the fake president at Crawford.”
“Right, photographic evidence, too. And, we kinda know some people who are trying to save the real president.” The soldier's eyes widened a little. “Yeah, I know what it sounds like, but we're the real deal. Can you take us to somebody?”
The soldier looked back at his convoy. “Right. You stay here for a minute.” He went back to his truck and talked into a radio for several minutes.
“Think he believed a thing I said?”
“Would you?”
Mike shrugged. “I would. But, I'm predisposed to that kind of thing.”
“Good point.” She looked at the soldier for a minute, then said, “Maybe he is, too. We could get lucky.” She hugged her children to her and said, “I wonder how they're doing in Crawford.”

Janice and Jake walked up to the side of the gurney and looked down at Kevin. The medical staff had already shut his eyes and cleaned him up considerably, but there was no color in his face and the clothes still on him were darkened by his blood. Jake swallowed through the lump in his throat and said, “He never even got to loan me any money.”
Janice laughed a little at the gallows humor, then put a hand on Kevin's shoulder. “We need to make sure somebody takes care of his dog.” Jake nodded. “Does he - did he have family?”
“I don't know.” Jake tried to put down the grief and think clearly. “We'll need to get his personal effects, get to his house in Bryan and we should be able to find out from there.” He looked at the curtain separating this little area from the rest of the ER, and saw President Bush standing there, looking grim. “We could also use a certain contact we just made to find everything out.”

in 2000, President Morris Appleby of the European Union, after assuming dictatorial powers in the wake of the Y2K disaster, appears on television to calm the general population. While addressing the large number of disappearances of European citizens, as well as citizens of a certain religious bent across the world, Appleby pauses and looks at the camera. “Look,” the British gentleman says, “I'm the Anti-Christ. I know it, you know it, I never could fool anybody. All those people gone – it's the Rapture. They pulled out of the hotel's parking lot gently, and made sure to head in the direction that the soldier had indicated they needed to go. After they were out of sight of the hotel, though, they went off-road and started heading for the front line.
“How long before we get to the New Mexicans?” Steph kept a steady watch through the back window to see if the soldiers were going to follow them.
“Maybe thirty minutes. They're not that far away.” Mike wasn't driving very fast, but they were bouncing around pretty heavily. “According to the last post I was able to read, they've been making good advances. Soon as the troops they're fighting realize they're not up against Osama bin Laden, they've been switching sides. ”
“Good. That means there won't be too much dyin'.”
“We can always hope.”

The tires squealed out a protest as Janice stopped inches from the emergency room door of the Brackenridge Hospital. She hopped out and opened the back door. Kevin was struggling to breath; his face was covered in sweat, his lips trickling blood. She gently pulled him out while Jake pushed from behind.
A nurse came running out, took a look at the dark red stains all over the trio, and ran back inside. When the three of them hit the door, they were met by a team with a gurney and a crash cart who immediately took Kevin from them and started working on him. The nurse came over to them and said, “I'm going to need one of you to fill out the pap - “ Her voice trailed off as she saw President Bush walking up behind his rescuers. “I thought he was on his way to Washington.”
“Don't believe everything you see on TV,” Jake whispered to her. “We have somebody else in the car who didn't make it.” He put an arm across Janice's shoulder, and she bowed her head to hide the tears.
“We'll take care of them,” the nurse said, still watching the president as she assembled another team to get Eli.
Janice got control of herself and looked up at Jake as Eli's body rolled by them. She heard the president mumbling a small prayer for him, and the strangeness of that scene almost made her laugh. “It's been a hard couple of days, hasn't it?”
“Girl, it's been somethin'.”
She put her head on his shoulder and he wrapped his arms around her. The sounds of the hospital, the direness of their situation, faded away for one brief moment as they just took comfort in each other's presence.
The cessation of activity from the curtained chamber where they had taken Kevin brought them back. A doctor was walking over to them, wearing a very somber expression. Janice straightened and prepared herself.
He asked them, “Are either of you family?”
President Bush stepped up, much to the doctor's surprise. “I think you can waive that requirement for these folks, doc.”
“Y-yes, sir, Mr. President.” The doctor recovered himself and looked over at Janice and Jake. “I'm very sorry.”
